Presentation for 2011

Prizes galore again!

Over 100 enthusiastic sailors gave up their Bonfire Night celebrations this year to attend a very enjoyable evening at the 2011 race Presentation Dinner held at the Celtic Royal Hotel, Caernarfon, on Saturday 5th November. It was a great chance for everyone to get together again.
Lt.Col.Colin Lt. Col. Colin Walker, who was secretary of the race until 2007, excelled himself as Master of Ceremonies and prizes were again presented by Elfyn Llwyd MP. The winning team, Danu Technologies were not able to come over from Ireland to receive the Daily Telegraph Cup, but John Donnelly and his crew from White Clouds were there to be awarded the Merioneth Yacht Club trophy for the second yacht to finish the race. It was especially gratifying to see this team achieve success as they were tipped to do well in 2010 but were forced to withdraw after going aground in the Menai Straits. White Clouds were also awarded the Barmouth Publicity Association Cup for the IRC Handicap fastest Sailing Aggregate.
Runner Martin Beale again took away the King of the Mountains trophy (the Damart cup), this time with running partner Ian Ridgeway. The pair also ran away with cups for the fastest times on Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis. Veteran Runners Richard Ludlow and Natasha Scrivens were awarded the Peck and Royle cups. Paul Singleton, skipper of GFT was there to accept the Kamminga clogs this year. But it is fair to say that their mountain aggregate time was the longest only because Dylan Jones was taken ill on Scafell and runner Saul Lovatt had to do the mountain twice! GFT also won the Royal Hotel Cup for the fastest first leg, the Beneteau trophy and the Arfon Trophy for the first Welsh team.

Third overall, the Australian Team Whistler were also winners of the coveted Tilman Trophy for the team with at least four members of the crew completing a mountain section, inspired by the exploits of sailor, mountaineer and Barmouth resident Major Harold Tilman. Team Whistler were also awarded the John Stockford Club trophy. Second in the Tilman trophy were first time entrants Questar, from Salcombe. Third Tilman trophy went to Bill Tipper and his team on Satisfaction. And ‘satisfaction’ sums it up for Bill, because this was his third attempt at the race; he and his team had to withdraw in previous races because of bad weather (they were in a much smaller 26ft J80!).
The Dutch team, Flemish Lowlanders, were the proud recipients of the Anarchy trophy, awarded for the best effort among the smaller yachts, and the Fjallraven Cup for the best performance by a foreign team. And last, but certainly not least, they were delighted to walk away with the Last Inn Trophy. Winners of the Wrinklies trophy were Firefly, also from Salcombe, and the Light Infantry Bugle went to 47th Regiment, Royal Artillery. The Karrimor award for the team raising most for charity went to Bill Tipper and his team on Satisfaction. Bill and his brothers Tom and Joe Tipper, together with friends Simon Heppell and Richard Mortiboys raised £11,000 for the Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust. A total of over £24,000 was raised for charity this year by all the teams.
