Look at http://www.caernarfon-hbr.demon.co.uk/buoys.jpg for a copy of the channel marker buoys and latest information. The last time I looked it was updated 04/03/2010. The local harbour masters know the race, many competing in the past, and, if they can be, are very helpful people.
On approach from mussel bank buoy keep to the buoyed channel, many have come to grief by trying to take a short cut. Remember to hold your position if you are racing/close to other competitors approach in order. The ‘pier’ at Caernarfon can be very slippery, due to weed and other growth. Teams have dropped out of the race here due to runners getting injured by not taking care when getting off the boat. The marshals are not allowed to help with landing so have your own ropes ready. Beware the tide and wind when approaching. When you’ve dropped your runners do not stay on the pier, pull away to allow other teams to take their place. There used to be temporary visitors holding moorings off the marina, they haven’t been there the last couple of years. You will need to anchor off. Some places are not very good ground so check your holding. When you pick up your runners, there will be others just arriving so keep a look out, especially when the other teams are close to your time.
Support team members have access to the pier and there is a Morrisons store very close for them to get any ‘quick’ supplies.
It takes between 35 and 60 minutes to reach the Swellies from here, if you have wind. Again I’d stick to the marked channel. I’ll leave you to consider your route through the Swellies.
The other place to take care is off Beaumaris. It is possible to mistake some buoys as channel markers so take care. Stick to the marked channel and you should be ok.
At Puffin Island the regular channel is to the west between Trwyn Du light and the island but it is possible to go to the east side if the tide is right. There is a bank to cross first and there is a strong current run close in to the island.
From here it can be a really lovely sail to Whitehaven or it can be hell as it was three years ago.
What you do with this info is up to you, everyone has their own approach to this race. Good luck everyone.
